Why are we asking for your support?
Gallaudet University Press is the only academic press with a mission to share knowledge by and about deaf and hard of hearing people with the world. As a non-profit university press, we are committed to publishing peer-reviewed scholarship that benefits the communities we serve. Our trade list reaches a non-specialist audience and is comprised of memoirs, literature, general interest non-fiction, and reference books. GU Press is the publisher of two journals, American Annals of the Deaf and Sign Language Studies. Both journals were the first of their kind, and both continue to present new research from thought leaders around the world.
Our publishing program reflects the rich cultural life and diverse perspectives of these communities and strives to promote understanding and recognition of deaf people and signed languages around the world. Many of our books make important contributions to the scholarly fields we serve, but do not have the large readership necessary to support all the costs that go into publishing and promoting them.
As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we reflect on our past contributions, but we also look to the future. We are committed to Gallaudet University’s bilingual mission and to publishing content in American Sign Language and written English. Video content is a vital component to serving our audience and advancing our mission. However, bilingual publishing requires financial resources that are beyond our means as a self-supporting entity.
What will we do with your donation?
Your donation will ensure that we can continue breaking new ground for the next 40 years by funding projects that:
- include signed language video content on new online platforms;
- represent important cultural significance by documenting and preserving deaf lives and deaf communities; and
- inform and advance scholarship in nascent, specialized fields.

- Purchase books at our website. Buying direct provides us with higher sales revenue, and we can reinvest that money in our work. Follow us on social media or sign up for our newsletter to take advantage of promotional discounts that we offer throughout the year. Even when you buy from us at a discount, we still benefit.
