This history of the deaf community in the US was first published in 1981. This edition contains a new brief preface surveying changes in legislation, technological advancements, and achievements in educating the public since 1981. The heavily illustrated reference offers decade-by-decade chapters on the origins and development of schools, organizations, and programs for the deaf and public achievements by deaf people. There are also thematic chapters on deaf humor, deaf artists and athletes, publications for the deaf, American Sign Language, and the National Association for the Deaf. The book is illustrated with a wealth of b&w [black and white] historical and contemporary photos, illustrations, and artwork. The book can be used as a text in courses on deaf culture, in orientation-to-deafness seminars, and in teacher and counselor preparation programs. Gannon is affiliated with Gallaudet University.
