Arguing that more action is needed for equitable access, the authors draw on interviews and online surveys they conducted with deaf and hard of hearing individuals who were the only hearing-impaired students in their school (who are now ages 18 to 34) to describe how to make the school experience better for them. They discuss friendships and social access; identity development; interpreters and other placement issues; the current system, including the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), advocacy and reform efforts, and the phenomena of itinerant teaching and interpreting; summer and weekend programs; and the work of deaf and hard of hearing parents, advocates, and scholars.
